Who is Magic™?

If you find yourself asking “who is Magic™?”, “Why is there a ™ in her name?”, and “why are you the Magic™ Astrologer?” you have come to the right place.

First and foremost, Magic™ is my best friend. She is a quintessential Pisces. Our respective life paths first intertwined in May of 2015 when I was still an undergraduate in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Washington. At the time, I was dating someone who worked at a veterinary clinic and Magic™ was found by her coworker on the street one fateful day. The person I was dating texted me the two pictures you see here of Magic™ as a kitten and begged that I take her in to my home as she had no where else to go. Not knowing this would be a frequent occurrence with any animal that came through the clinic she worked at and thinking cats were low maintenance, I decided to give Magic™ a trial run by having her over for a night so I could meet her. Long story short, Magic™ never left.

The first picture I ever saw of Magic™ when she was 8 weeks old.

So why is she named Magic™ and why is there a ™ in her name??

Now you might understandably be wondering about her name. When I first got Magic™, she tested positive for FIV or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. I decided to name her “Magic” after Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr., former professional basketball player and president of the Los Angeles Lakers, who is a fierce advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention and known to be HIV positive. When Magic™ eventually tested negative at 8 months of age, the parallel was reinforced as Earvin Johnson also tested negative for HIV following his consistent access to lifesaving antiretrovirals and quality health care, which caused his viral load to be undetectable. The key difference is that while Magic™’s negative test was because her mother, who was likely FIV+, passed on FIV antibodies to Magic™ and luckily not the virus, Earvin Johnson does continue to have HIV and continues to be a powerful advocate among HIV activists. In commemoration of this history, Magic™’s next birthday party will be used to raise funds for FIV research and awareness. As to why there is a ™ in her name, that is a different story.

On April 14th, 2017 I was made aware of an article King 5 News had published the day before about “Magic the hiking cat from Seattle.”

Magic™ hiking Wallace Falls on September 14th, 2015

In the article, the cat referred to as “Magic the hiking cat” was only one year old at the time. I have pictures of Magic™ hiking before this cat was even born. See attached some pictures of Magic™ hiking back in September of 2015. This is nearly a full year before the other “Magic” was born. As a result, I had many friends email the news station about who the real “Magic the hiking cat from Seattle” was and asking them to correct the mistake in their reporting to no avail. As a result, I was left with little options of what to do. To prevent any further copycats, pun-intended, I consistently started including a ™ in Magic™’s name to distinguish her. This way while there are multiple cats named Magic, you can trust there is only one Magic™ the Cat (#Magic™theCat).

Note: The ™ is silent when stating her name verbally.

Magic™ has been a huge inspiration, including being the subject for various art pieces produced by myself and others.

She was the subject of my senior capstone in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Washington, she was a guest on Not Too Late with El Sanchez, a variety talk show in Seattle for which she was brought back for the season finale due to being a fan favorite, she was sponsored by The Mountain® Art Wear, and hired as an influencer by Katris® to advertise their new nest, a multifunctional cat lounge. Magic™ was found to be more alike to sabertooth tigers than 79% of other cats, which I take as evidence of her being the descendant of sabertooth nobility (see attached). Magic™ has made countless other cultural contributions and continues to serve as a feminine icon within Western culture. Her popularity is international including being known by individuals in Germany, Norway, Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Croatia, and more.

It is ultimately due to all of this, along with the obvious connotations of the occult, that I have become the Magic™ Astrologer. To me she will always be the one, the only, Magic™ the Cat.
